A poor start to the match sealed a season-opener loss for the Maitland Mustangs on Saturday night. The Mustangs finished their first quarter nine points down to the Bankstown Bruins at the Maitland Federation Centre and coach Luke Boyle said they struggled to overcome the deficit for the rest of the match. Wins to Maitland in the second and fourth quarters were not enough to close the gap and the Bruins took the match 77-72.

Sure, they were outplayed — by a considerable margin. But though the final score irked him, Denny Lambert said he liked the way his Soo Greyhounds competed Saturday, despite dropping a 5-2 decision to the Plymouth Whalers before 2,743 at the Compuware Sports Arena. What pleased Lambert most, as his team headed home, is this: The Greyhounds got a split on the road and took home ice away from the Whalers.

This one hurt. Wish I could appreciate this game/ending for all it was. And wish we had gotten a hand in Lucious' face but it was uncontested.

Two women claim they found two marijuana "roaches" in the bottom of their Popeyes french fries bag, prompting the company to investigate but leaving police with little means to determine their origin. "I grabbed a couple, she grabbed a couple, and lo and behold, we see something at the bottom of the bag," said Stefanie Ward, 27, of Alton. "I didn't know what it was. I've never been around it, never smoked it, and I've never seen it. I said, 'This is a burnt cigarette.'"
